Unlock your style: A guide to adding colour through accessories

If you find yourself reaching for black or neutral tones day after day, you're not alone. Many of us have become accustomed to the safety of a monochrome wardrobe, but would like to break free from that comfort zone. So, let’s talk about how to add vibrant pops of colour to your outfits effortlessly.

I think it’s important to start by saying you don’t have to leap into dressing colourfully with both feet. Adding small splashes of colour to neutral outfits is a great way to get more comfortable with it and allows you to start experimenting with colour combinations that you like and that feel right for you. My favourite way to add colour to an outfit is through jewellery (of course!) and accessories like headwear, shoes, bags and tights.

Here are some more pointers to help you feel more confident with colour:

Overcoming Colour Fear

Firstly, let's address the elephant in the room—colour fear. It's natural to hesitate when incorporating bold colours into your wardrobe, but I believe you should never be afraid to wear colour. Colour is a powerful tool for self-expression and for me is something that makes me feel more confident. It can also really lift my mood. If I’m feeling a bit down I often add a splash of my favourite colour to my outfit for mood boosting purposes! If you’ve never tried this I suggest giving it a go!

Black as Your Canvas

For those of you who adore your black wardrobe staples, worry not! Black is not off-limits; in fact, it's an excellent canvas for colourful accessories. That black dress that has become your wardrobe staple can come to life with a burst of colour from statement jewellery, scarves, or a vibrant handbag. The possibilities are endless.

The Power of Jewellery

Let's dive into the world of accessories, starting of course with jewellery. Statement necklaces and earrings are your secret weapons for injecting colour effortlessly. Mix and match different pieces to create a fun and personalised look that feels unique to you.

Beyond the Basics

Accessories go beyond just jewellery. Experiment with scarves, headbands, tights, shoes, bags, belts—the list is endless. These elements not only add colour but also bring texture and depth to your outfits. Don't be afraid to mix and match.

Building Confidence

Fashion should be about having fun and expressing yourself. If you're just starting out with colour, consider picking one shade or a combination of two favourite colours that you think work well together.

Embracing Seasonless Colour Who says you can only wear certain colours in specific seasons? Embrace seasonless colour and incorporate it seamlessly throughout the year. From sunny orange in summer to cosy pastel lilac in winter, let your wardrobe reflect your mood rather than the calendar.

DIY Customization For those craving a personal touch, why not try some DIY customisation? Customise an old pair of jeans, revamp old shoes, or experiment with different ways to wear a scarf. The joy of creating one-of-a-kind accessories lies in the process, and the result is a wardrobe that feels like you.

 Thrifty Shopping

Adding colour to your wardrobe doesn't have to break the bank. Explore the world of thrift shopping—charity shops and second-hand websites are treasure troves of affordable and unique accessories. It's a sustainable and budget-friendly way to experiment with colours and styles.

Whether you're making small changes or diving headfirst with growing a colourful wardrobe remember that fashion is about expressing your individuality and having fun. Don't take it too seriously!
